Margin is the winner's share of all votes minus the runner-up's. Seat counts include seats not on the ballot that year; independents Bernie Sanders and Angus King (and, before 2025, Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin) caucus with Democrats and are counted with them. A flip compares the winner's party with the party holding the seat on Election Day. Vice President JD Vance breaks 50–50 ties. 2024 shows the 34 contests that decided seats; California's same-day contest for the last weeks of the term is left out. 2024 results: Clerk of the U.S. House, Statistics of the Presidential and Congressional Election of November 5, 2024 (official returns from each state; fusion-party votes in New York and Connecticut are added to the candidate). 2026 results come from CivicAPI and are unofficial; Georgia requires a majority, so a race there can go to a Dec. 1 runoff, and Alaska and Maine count ranked-choice ballots after Election Day. Senators on each date: the congress-legislators project.
